Spermidine has an unfortunate name, an interesting biology, and a supplement category that oversells it. It is a molecule your cells make on their own, that shows up in a short list of foods, and that has become the ingredient most associated with autophagy — the cellular recycling process — in longevity research. What spermidine is

Polyamines are a family of small molecules — putrescine, spermidine, and spermine are the main three — found in every living cell. They bind to DNA, RNA, and proteins and are involved in cell growth, stability, and maintenance. The names are historical accidents (spermidine was first isolated from semen in the 17th century) and say nothing about what the molecule does in your body today.

Spermidine sits in the middle of the family: the body makes it from putrescine and can convert it onward to spermine. It is present in every tissue. You get it three ways:

  1. Your cells synthesize it.
  2. Your gut bacteria produce it.
  3. You eat it. Wheat germ is the richest common source; aged cheeses, mushrooms, soybeans and natto, whole grains, and some vegetables contribute.

Why it declines with age, and why that matters

Both endogenous production and typical dietary intake of spermidine tend to decline over the lifespan. That observation is the whole reason spermidine sits in longevity research: if a molecule involved in cellular maintenance becomes scarcer with age, supplying more of it is a reasonable thing to study.

The maintenance process spermidine is most associated with is autophagy — the cell's program for identifying worn-out proteins and organelles, breaking them down, and reusing the parts. Autophagy runs continuously and rises under conditions such as fasting and exercise. Spermidine has been studied for its association with autophagy-related pathways, which is why the two words appear together so often. What the research shows

Be precise about the evidence, because the category is not.

Preclinical. In laboratory and animal models, dietary spermidine was associated with induction of autophagy (Eisenberg 2016, *Nature Medicine*). This is the foundational paper most spermidine content cites. It is animal data. It establishes a mechanism worth studying, not a human outcome.

Human. Human research on spermidine exists — dietary intake studies and small supplementation trials using wheat germ extract — but the outcome measures in those studies are not ones Age Revive will attach to a supplement, and the evidence base is early. We do not cite them on this page, and we do not claim any human outcome for spermidine.

What that leaves: a natural molecule with a plausible role in a real cellular process, declining with age, with animal evidence behind the mechanism. That is an honest reason to include it in a formula. It is not a reason to promise you anything.

The wheat question

Nearly all supplemental spermidine comes from wheat germ extract, because wheat germ is the most concentrated practical source. Two consequences:

  • Wheat germ extract contains wheat. If you have a wheat allergy or celiac disease, a wheat-germ spermidine supplement is not for you, regardless of what the front label says. Read the allergen line.
  • "Spermidine content" and "extract weight" are different numbers. A capsule can contain 800 mg of wheat germ extract and 1 mg of spermidine. Look for the spermidine amount itself.

What the research does not show

  • Spermidine has not been shown to extend human lifespan. Lifespan findings are from animal models.
  • Spermidine does not "trigger autophagy" in the way fasting does. It is studied for its association with autophagy-related pathways; the honest label language is "supports."
  • No human trial has tested 15 mg of spermidine in a 7-day monthly format, and none has tested CELLUNOVA.
  • Spermidine is not a treatment for any condition, and this page is not medical advice.
  • Food sources are not a supplement, and a supplement is not a substitute for eating the foods.

How to read a spermidine label

  1. The spermidine amount, not the extract amount. "Wheat germ extract 800 mg" is not a spermidine dose.
  2. The allergen line. Wheat germ means wheat. It should be disclosed, not buried.
  3. What it is paired with. Single-ingredient spermidine at a low dose is common. Ask what else is in the serving and whether those doses are real.
  4. The claim attached. "Studied for its role in autophagy" is honest. "Activates autophagy" or any lifespan language is not.
  5. A lot certificate with a lab name and tested values.
