What Is Autophagy? And Why CELLUNOVA Is a 7-Day Monthly Layer, Not a Daily Habit

Published 2026-09-16 · Last reviewed 2026-09-16 · By Andy Palenzuela, Founder

Autophagy is one of the few longevity words that describes something real, well-characterized, and happening in you right now — which is exactly why it gets abused on supplement labels. This article explains what autophagy is in plain English, what is known to influence it, what the research on the compounds in CELLUNOVA does and does not show, and why the product is built as a 7-day monthly layer rather than another bottle on the daily shelf. It is written by the founder of Age Revive, who spent 14+ years inside regulated nutrition supply chains. CELLUNOVA contains wheat (spermidine source) and is currently out of stock; the waitlist is open.

Key facts

  • Autophagy: ("self-eating") is the cellular recycling process that breaks down worn-out proteins and organelles into components the cell reuses. It runs continuously and is strongly influenced by nutrition patterns, exercise, and fasting.
  • Mitophagy: the recycling of worn-out mitochondria specifically — is one branch of it. That branch is CELLUBIOME's territory (urolithin A); this article is about the broader process.
  • CELLUNOVA: is a periodic layer: 5 capsules daily for 7 consecutive days, repeated monthly. Not daily. Not a maintenance supplement.
  • Actives per day: spermidine 15 mg (from wheat germ) · trans-resveratrol 500 mg · quercetin 500 mg · fisetin 100 mg · green tea extract 300 mg (50% EGCG) · NAC 600 mg · PQQ 10 mg · calcium alpha-ketoglutarate 300 mg · astaxanthin 4 mg · BioPerine 5 mg.
  • Allergen: Contains wheat (spermidine source).
  • Evidence: The evidence is largely preclinical. Human outcome data at supplement doses are not established for these compounds, and no study has tested CELLUNOVA.
  • Status: out of stock — next production run in progress. Waitlist open on the CELLUNOVA product page.

What autophagy is

Every cell accumulates waste: misfolded proteins, damaged organelles, aggregates that no longer function. Autophagy is the housekeeping program that deals with it. A membrane forms around the material to be cleared, seals it into a vesicle, and delivers it to the lysosome — the cell's digestive compartment — where enzymes break it down into amino acids and other building blocks the cell can reuse.

Three things worth knowing:

  1. It is constant, not a switch. Autophagy runs at a baseline level all the time. It rises and falls with conditions; it does not turn on and off.
  2. It is regulated by nutrient signals. Fasting, calorie restriction, and exercise are the best-characterized influences. When nutrients are scarce, cells recycle more. This is the reason "autophagy" shows up in every fasting conversation.
  3. It has branches. Mitophagy handles mitochondria. Other branches handle other cargo. "Supports autophagy-related cellular renewal processes" is the honest umbrella phrase — it describes support for the pathway family, not a promise that any specific cargo gets cleared.

What "supports" means here — and what it does not

A supplement cannot "trigger autophagy" the way a fast can, and no honest brand should say it does. What the research on certain compounds shows is association with autophagy-related pathways — mostly in cells and animal models, occasionally in small human studies of biomarkers. The approved way to describe that on a label is structure/function language: "supports autophagy-related cellular renewal processes."

Age Revive uses that phrase and nothing stronger. CELLUNOVA is not a drug protocol, makes no lifespan claim, and does not claim to remove anything from your body. It is a periodic layer of compounds studied in cellular-aging and autophagy research, at disclosed doses, in a format designed for intermittent rather than daily use.

What is in CELLUNOVA, and what each ingredient is for

Trans-resveratrol500 mgA polyphenol studied in cellular-aging research; antioxidant support.
Quercetin500 mgA flavonoid studied in cellular-aging research; antioxidant support.
Fisetin100 mgA flavonoid studied in cellular-aging research; antioxidant support.
Green tea extract (50% EGCG)300 mgA green tea catechin with antioxidant properties, studied in autophagy research.
NAC (N-acetylcysteine)600 mgSupports the body's glutathione production; antioxidant defenses.
PQQ10 mgStudied for its role in mitochondrial biogenesis pathways; supports mitochondrial resilience.
Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate300 mgA Krebs-cycle intermediate that supports cellular energy metabolism.
Astaxanthin4 mgCarotenoid antioxidant support.
BioPerine5 mgIncluded to support nutrient absorption.

Every dose is printed on the label. None of these is a decorative amount.

What the spermidine research shows

Spermidine is the ingredient most directly tied to the autophagy story, so it deserves the most honest treatment.

In preclinical models, dietary spermidine was associated with autophagy induction (Eisenberg 2016). That is animal data. It does not establish human lifespan, heart, or outcome effects, and we do not claim any. Spermidine is a natural polyamine found in wheat germ, aged cheese, mushrooms, and fermented foods; dietary intake tends to decline with age, which is the reason it is studied.

CELLUNOVA's spermidine comes from wheat germ, at 15 mg per day. It contains wheat. If you have a wheat allergy or celiac disease, this product is not for you — review the label and consult your clinician.

Why a 7-day monthly format

Most of the longevity category turns every ingredient into a daily habit, which is how people end up with nine bottles and no idea what any of them do. CELLUNOVA was built on a different assumption: some compounds make more sense as a periodic layer than a permanent one.

The format is simple and it is disclosed as a schedule, not a promise: 5 capsules daily for 7 consecutive days, then return to the daily base (CELLUNAD+ and CELLUBIOME) for the rest of the month. Repeat monthly.

The reasons for that design:

  • Role clarity. Daily formulas do daily jobs — NAD+ foundation, gut-mito support. A periodic layer keeps those roles distinct instead of stacking ten more ingredients onto the daily routine.
  • Dose adequacy without daily load. Delivering nine actives at research-informed doses every day of the month is a lot of capsules and a lot of concentrated botanicals. Seven days a month is a deliberate ceiling.
  • Evaluability. If you take something every day forever, you cannot tell what it did. A defined window with a defined return to baseline is easier to reason about.

None of this is an outcome claim. It is a design rationale for how the layer is scheduled.

A note on concentrated botanicals

CELLUNOVA delivers concentrated extracts — green tea extract at 300 mg (50% EGCG) among them — at doses that are meaningful, which is the point. That is also the reason for the standing advisory: consult your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, managing a condition, or taking medication. Follow the label. If you feel unwell, stop and consult a clinician.

What the research does not show

  • No study has tested CELLUNOVA. The research is on individual ingredients, mostly in cells and animals.
  • No ingredient here has been shown to extend human lifespan. Lifespan findings are from animal models and do not transfer.
  • Autophagy support is not a treatment for any condition and not a substitute for the things that most influence autophagy: how you eat, when you eat, and whether you move.
  • A 7-day format is a schedule, not a cleaning cycle. It makes no claim about removing anything from your body.
  • Quercetin, fisetin, and resveratrol are flavonoids and polyphenols studied in cellular-aging research. That is the full extent of the claim.

Frequently asked questions

What is autophagy in simple terms? Autophagy is the cell's recycling program. It breaks down worn-out proteins and organelles into building blocks the cell can reuse. It runs continuously and increases under conditions like fasting and exercise.

Do supplements trigger autophagy? No supplement should claim to. Certain compounds — spermidine among them — are studied for their association with autophagy-related pathways, mostly in preclinical models. The honest description is "supports autophagy-related cellular renewal processes," not "triggers autophagy."

Why is CELLUNOVA only taken 7 days a month? It is designed as a periodic layer, not a daily habit: 5 capsules daily for 7 consecutive days, repeated monthly, with the daily base (CELLUNAD+ and CELLUBIOME) the rest of the month. The format keeps roles distinct and caps the monthly load of concentrated botanicals. It is a schedule, not an outcome claim.

Does CELLUNOVA contain allergens? Yes. CELLUNOVA contains wheat — the spermidine is derived from wheat germ. If you have a wheat allergy or celiac disease, review the label and consult your clinician.
